From snow-covered winters to lavender-filled summers, Hokkaido is a destination best explored by rail. Japan’s northern island is connected by an extensive railway network that makes traveling between its iconic cities and scenic countryside both easy and comfortable. For international travelers, a dedicated rail pass can significantly reduce transportation costs while offering flexibility to explore at your own pace. This guide explains everything you need to know before using the JR Hokkaido rail pass—from purchasing options and seat reservations to itinerary ideas that help you make the most of your journey.

What Is the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass?

The JR Hokkaido Rail Pass is a regional rail pass designed for foreign visitors traveling around Japan’s northern island, Hokkaido. It offers unlimited rides on JR Hokkaido trains for a fixed number of consecutive days, making it a convenient and cost-effective option for exploring major destinations such as Sapporo, Otaru, Hakodate, Asahikawa, and Furano.

With this pass, travelers can use limited express, rapid, and local JR trains, including reserved seats in ordinary cars. However, it does not cover the Hokkaido Shinkansen or non-JR transport such as subways and trams in Sapporo.

For visitors planning to travel between multiple cities across Hokkaido, the pass can significantly reduce transportation costs compared with purchasing individual train tickets.

How to Buy the Pass?

Buying the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass is straightforward, the process has become more digital. You have three main options depending on whether you want to book seats in advance or prefer to handle things in person.

Method 1: Official Website (Best for Planning)

The official way to buy is through the JR-EAST Train Reservation website. This is the only way to reserve your seats online before you arrive in Japan. Since many Hokkaido trains are now "all-reserved," this saves you from stressful sold-out situations.

  • When to buy: From 10:00 AM (JST) one month before your start date.

  • Process:

    • Go to the JR reservation website.

    • Purchase the JR Hokkaido Pass online.

    • Receive a reservation confirmation or exchange order (QR code/email).

    • When you arrive in Japan, bring your passport and confirmation to a JR counter to receive the actual pass.

  • Where to exchange the pass: Common exchange locations include:

    • New Chitose Airport Station

    • Sapporo Station

    • Asahikawa Station

    • Hakodate Station

    • Kushiro or Abashiri Station

In Hokkaido (See here for station maps)

📌Tip: Exchange orders are usually valid for 90 days from the issue date.

Method 2: Online Travel Agencies

Travelers often use third-party sites (Klook, KKday, etc.) to take advantage of sales or pay in their local currency.

  • Process:

    • Buy an Exchange Order from an authorized travel agency.

    • Receive the voucher or digital QR code.

    • Exchange it for the actual rail pass at a JR Hokkaido counter in Japan.

⚠️Note: You can only start reserving seats after you have exchanged the voucher for the physical pass in Japan (unless the agency provides a specific JR-East integration link).

Method 3: In-Person in Hokkaido

You can also buy the pass after arriving in Hokkaido.

  • Where: Major stations including New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Hakodate, Asahikawa, Kushiro, and Obihiro.

  • Requirements: You must have your physical passport.

  • Payment: Cash (Yen) or Credit Card. Mobile payments like Apple Pay are generally not accepted for pass purchases at the window.

⚠️Note: Buying in Japan usually costs slightly more than buying online in advance.

Mandatory Seat Reservations

In Hokkaido, you'll encounter two main types of train cars on Limited Express trains (like the Hokuto, Suzuran, Kamui):

  • Reserved Seats (指定席): You are guaranteed a specific seat. You must get a seat reservation ticket for these, which is free with your rail pass.

  • Non-reserved Seats (自由席): You can sit in any available seat in the non-reserved cars on a first-come, first-served basis.

From March 14, 2026, all seats on several major Hokkaido limited express trains (Kamui, Lilac, Soya, Sarobetsu, and Okhotsk) will become reserved. This means you will need a reservation for every journey on these trains.

Here is how to make your reservations for free using your pass:

1. Online Reservation (Before or During Your Trip)

If you bought your pass through the official JR-EAST Train Reservation website, this is the most efficient method.

  • The Process: Log in to the portal, select "Seat Reservation (using a rail pass)," and choose your route.

  • Availability: You can book seats from one month before your travel date up to 6 minutes before the train departs.

  • Pick-up: Even if you reserve online, you must collect a physical paper seat ticket from a ticket machine or counter in Hokkaido before boarding.

2. Using the Ticket Machines (Fastest In-Person)

Most travelers find the "Reserved Seat Ticket Vending Machines" (available in English) the quickest way to book once they are in Japan.

  1. Select Language: Tap "English" at the top right.

  2. Scan/Insert: Select "Reserve seat with discounted ticket" and scan the QR code on your Rail Pass (or insert the pass if prompted).

  3. Find Train: Enter your departure and arrival stations and the time.

  4. Choose Seat: You can view a seat map and pick your favorite spot (e.g., a window seat).

  5. Collect Ticket: The machine will spit out a small seat ticket. Keep this with you for the conductor to check.

3. At the Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi)

If you find the machines confusing or have a complex journey, visit a manned ticket window.Show your Rail Pass and tell the staff your destination and preferred time.

🔔The "Vacant Seat" Rule (Last Resort):

If you are in a rush and couldn't get a reservation, you can board some trains (like the Hokuto or Ozora) with just your pass.

  • How it works: You may sit in any seat that does not have a reservation.

  • The Catch: If a passenger with a reservation for that seat shows up, you must move. If the train is completely full, you may have to stand in the area between cars.

  • Advice: Since reservations are free with your pass, it is always better to take 2 minutes at a machine to secure a seat.

How to Use the Pass?

Using the pass is quite simple once you have the physical ticket in your hand. The process is almost entirely automated.

Entering and Exiting Stations:

  • Automatic Gates: Most major stations in Hokkaido (like Sapporo, New Chitose Airport, and Asahikawa) have automatic ticket gates.

  • How to do it: Insert your Rail Pass into the slot. It will pop out at the other end—do not forget to grab it. * The Seat Ticket: Do not insert your small seat reservation ticket into the gate. Only the main Rail Pass goes into the machine.

  • Manned Gates: At smaller stations without automatic gates, simply show your pass to the staff at the window. They may apply a small stamp on your first day of use.

Using the Pass on Buses:

The pass is valid on local JR Hokkaido Buses (mostly in and around Sapporo).

  • How to ride: Enter through the rear door and take a small numbered slip (even though you have a pass).

  • Exiting: When you reach your stop, go to the front. Show the driver your Rail Pass and drop the numbered slip into the clear box by the driver. You do not need to pay any cash.

There is a magnet on the back of the ticket. Please be careful not to put your ticket and items using magnets (smartphone etc.) close to each other. Also, please do not bend your ticket.

Pro Tips for 2026

  1. Book Early: Almost all Limited Express trains (like Hokuto and Kamui) are now All-Reserved. You cannot just hop on; you must have a seat ticket.

  2. The "Unassigned" Backup: If the train is full, you can use an Unassigned Seat Ticket to sit in any empty seat, but you must move if someone with a reservation arrives.

  3. The "Airport" Rapid: The pass covers the Airport Rapid train between the airport and Sapporo. This train now has "U-Seat" (reserved) cars which you can book for free with your pass.

  4. Skip the Airport Queue: The New Chitose Airport office is often crowded. If you’re just going to Sapporo on Day 1, buy a single ticket and exchange your pass at Sapporo Station later to save time.

  5. Winter Travel: If traveling in Jan/Feb, expect delays. Always check the JR Hokkaido Train Status page on the morning of travel.

  6. Ekiben: Long-haul trains (like the 4-hour Hokuto to Hakodate) do not have food trolleys in 2026. Buy your "Ekiben" (station bento) at Sapporo Station before boarding.

  7. Pass Discounts: Show your physical pass at the JR Tower Observatory (T38) in Sapporo or the Goryokaku Tower in Hakodate for entry discounts.

Can I use the pass on the "SL Fuyu-no-Shitsugen" (Steam Train)?
